Question for Theo Technology Interpreter:

What Is the Difference between PIM and ERP?

Theo-denkt_lila

As a technology interpreter, I would like to explain the differences between ERP and PIM. After all, the devil is in the detail:

ERP PIM
Main task Resource planning (controlling business processes across departments) Product data management
Data type Data from different business areas Product data
Goal Optimize processes and reduce costs Creating a central platform for product information
Corporate divisions Finance, sales and marketing, human resources, warehouse, supply chain, projects, production, service Product management, marketing, e-commerce, sales, customer service

  • Do I need an ERP, PIM or both?

As can be seen in the table, both the ERP and the PIM system are used to collect and maintain data. The key difference is that the ERP system collects cross-departmental data for process optimization. As the name suggests, the PIM focuses on the product and is a database for product information.
It is important to mention that an ERP system also collects product data. A PIM may collect more data by default, meaning that an ERP system cannot replace a PIM system in some cases. Conversely, the complexity of an ERP system rules it out anyway.
For some companies, the optimal strategy is to use both systems and cleverly combine them. In this way, products can be managed holistically and effectively. Correct integration of the systems is essential to ensure a smooth flow of data. In summary, effective collaboration between ERP and PIM can help to increase the efficiency and performance of your company.

Do You Still Have Questions?

Find Answers in Our FAQs

  • What is a product information management system (PIM system)?

A Product Information Management (PIM) system is used to centrally manage, maintain and publish product information. It uses just one database (single source of truth). Data can therefore be collected, maintained and cleansed in a resource-saving manner. A PIM system has seamless integrations with various sales channels to make it easier to update data.

In summary, PIM systems fulfill three core functions:

    • Manage product information
    • Maintain and cleanse product information
    • Data synchronization with other systems (omni-channel sales)
  • Is a PIM system an ERP system?

No, a PIM system is not an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system. While an ERP system collects cross-departmental data for process optimization, the PIM system only functions as a database for product information. An ERP system also collects product data, but a PIM system may collect more data, which does not make it redundant. An ERP system could therefore replace a PIM system, but this is not possible the other way around.

  • How does PIM software work?

PIM software is based on a single source of truth – a central database for all product data. This means that data can be recorded and maintained in a resource-saving manner and is therefore available as real-time data throughout the company.

  • Why use a PIM system?

There are several good reasons to use a PIM system in addition to an ERP system. With the help of a PIM system …

    • … data can be better displayed.
    • … data can be maintained and recorded efficiently and with less effort.
    • … data quality can be improved by making data sets consistent and accurate and, conversely, less likely to contain errors.
    • … employees can be freed up by spending less time on manual checks and adjustments.
    • … marketing and product management departments can better control product information and implement changes more quickly.
    • … products can be introduced to the market more quickly.
    • … customers can be addressed more quickly and in a more targeted manner.
    • … companies can internationalize more easily by maintaining product data in several languages and managing it for different target markets.
  • What does a PIM system cost?

You can enquire about the costs for the introduction of PIMICS in the contact form below. We will be happy to help you.

  • Does Microsoft have a PIM system?

PIMICS is a PIM system that was developed specifically for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and Dynamics NAV. This enables efficient product data management in Business Central.
